BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- An upcoming fundraiser dinner will benefit families of children who must spend time at Children's of Alabama to give them an escape from their medical battles.

Lauren Marino is the director of marketing for Children’s Harbor. She joined CBS 42 Morning News to talk about how it benefits the children and families who use the facilities.

“Our mission is we provide refuge, respite and resources to families of seriously ill children at no cost to them,” Marino said.

There are two locations that do this. One is at Lake Martin at the lighthouse.

“Children can go there and just have a good time and feel like children,” Marino said. “We have camp partners that also host retreats there at no cost to them."

Marion said the Fork & Cork Chef’s Dinner is going to benefit the other location that is inside Children’s of Alabama at the Benjamin Russell building.

“Families can go there, and it’s like a home away from home in the hospital,” Marino said. “There’s plenty of amenities for children to have fun. We have a new air hockey and pool table, and you can volunteer there.”

Children’s Harbor also provides counseling and therapy services.

“Really, it’s that supplemental piece of medical treatment,” Marino said. “We’re coming alongside you and providing those often-overlooked services at no cost.”

The second annual Fork & Cork Chef’s Dinner is on Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. in Helen Restaurant. Tickets are almost sold out, but Marino said there’s still a chance to try and get them.

If you can’t attend the dinner, there’s also an opportunity to volunteer at any of the centers or upcoming events.
