BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Orlando Health, Inc. has signed an agreement to purchase majority interest in Brookwood Baptist Health.

According to a news release from Orlando Health, they will manage day-to-day operations at Brookwood Baptist Health in partnership with Baptist Health System, and the purchase is expected to be completed in the fall.

“We are honored to further Brookwood Baptist Health’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ. There is a need and opportunity for a private, not-for-profit healthcare system in this market,” said David Strong, president and CEO Orlando Health. “We believe this is a new day in healthcare for our organizations and look forward to making Brookwood Baptist the best healthcare system in Alabama.”

Thibaut van Marcke, currently senior vice president of Orlando Health Southeast Region and president of Orlando Health Phillips Hospital, will lead Orlando Health's efforts in Alabama.

Brookwood Baptist Health consists of five hospitals in central Alabama, more than 70 primary and specialty care clinics, 1,5000 affiliated physicians and more than 7,000 employees.

"We are pleased to have Orlando Health join Brookwood Baptist Health as a majority and managing partner. They have a proven track record in delivering high-quality healthcare services and are well positioned to invest in our community. We are excited to welcome them to Birmingham and to jointly support the faith-based mission of Brookwood Baptist Health," said Amy Allen, president and CEO of Baptist Health System.

Orlando Health is a healthcare system containing 17 hospitals, 10 free-standing emergency rooms and nine Hospital Care at Home programs throughout the southeast and Puerto Rico. Additionally, four hospitals and six free-standing emergency rooms are in development.
