BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Birmingham City Schools students and teachers will head back to the classroom to start a new school year Monday morning.
A back-to-school bash in Railroad Park on Sunday made sure that everyone will be prepared for the new year.
“You don’t always have the funds or financials to get the necessary supplies,” said Allen Pruitt Jr., the organizer of the event.
Pruitt organized the event to give back to the community. Those in attendance got to watch a live performance from Called II Worship, Pruitt's ensemble. Students were given bins full of everything needed to fill a backpack.
“These events take care of the basics, and any extras on the list, you can get those with these taking care of the basics," Dee Taylor said. "I just think it's great that they even make the effort."
Taylor was at the back-to-school bash with her grandson Roman. She said getting supplies like binders, paper and markers makes a huge difference.
“With inflation, it’s not cheap to get any school supplies," Taylor said. "For them to go out and buy everything, it's awesome."
Students weren’t the only ones leaving the park with supplies for the new school year. Pruitt had a surprise for teachers that came to the bash: $100 certificates.
"Because they have a lot to do on the first day and many days after that,” Pruitt said.
