BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Spirit Airlines will be adding its second route from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in June.

The Birmingham Airport Authority announced Tuesday that Spirit will have seasonal, nonstop service to Newark Liberty International Airport from Birmingham starting June 4. The ultra low-cost carrier started flights in Birmingham in October with daily, nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“We are thrilled to see Spirit Airlines continuing to invest in this community,” said Birmingham Airport Authority Board Chair Ashby Pate in a statement. “Their decision to add another destination speaks volumes about their confidence in this market and we are so pleased that customers will have another nonstop, low-fare option when they travel this summer."

Customers can book flights on the new route. Spirit will be the second airline to fly between Birmingham and the New York metropolitan area, as Delta Air Lines offers service from the Magic City to LaGuardia Airport.

According to the Birmingham Airport Authority, over 3.2 million people came through the city's airport in 2024, marking a 6% increase from 2023.
