BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- 52-year-old Maurice Turner was shot and killed just before 2 a.m. on July 17 inside of his home in the College Hills neighborhood.

Turner's siblings say he was inside of his home when he heard a knock on his back door, and before he was able to open the door shots were fired. One of the bullets struck him and he was found dead on his kitchen floor by Birmingham Police Officers.

Turner's sister, DeQuacha Fields, spoke about his unexpected death at a balloon release Wednesday.

"We cannot wrap our minds around it. We definitely don't understand why somebody would want to do this to our brother. We just have to get answers for him," said Fields.

Fields stood beside her three siblings, as well as a group of Turner's family and friends, as they spoke about who Turner was and how much he meant to all of them.

Fields described this past week as a nightmare and they're pleading for answers as no suspect has been arrested.

"We definitely just need to know why. We need to know who, and we want to know why because we know he didn't deserve this," said Fields.

Robert Banks, a close friend of Turner says his heart aches as he mourns the death of the man he considered his brother.

"He would do anything for anybody so it's very not understanding right now because I really can't grip it because here is a man that doesn't do anything in the neighborhood," said Banks.
"There wasn't not slick stuff here or slick stuff there. He didn't do anything but give you a helping hand."

Now Banks says he's left cherishing the memories and asking whoever is responsible for Turner's death to turn themselves in.

"For a community that's so close knit, it's impossible for people to keep getting killed in Smithfield or in College Hills and nothing be said about it," said Banks.
