BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin joined President Biden to share information on how the city utilizes investments from his administration.
Tuesday marked the first of a series of talks in which the President will discuss how the “Investing in America” agenda has impacted communities nationwide.
“In the weeks ahead, I’ll talk to Americans all across the country about the progress we are seeing in their communities,” President Biden said.
The virtual tour of the nation began with the Magic City. Mayor Woodfin credited Biden for bringing jobs to Birmingham, as the investments from the Biden administration have brought new opportunities to the city.
“There has been an upswing for us," Woodfin said. "Wages, income, and employment have been on the rise in Birmingham. The average income has increased by over $10,000."
Woodfin also highlighted the projects the city is undertaking with the funds, which will include workforce training and learning opportunity programs.
“It will allow us to rebuild something that is so important to all communities -- our North Birmingham Library,” he added.
One of the communities that will be directly impacted by the administration's $20 million investment is Smithfield. Symone Johnson, a mother of two, lives in the area and says the lack of childcare keeps her from working full-time. She's glad to hear that a childcare facility will be constructed nearby.
“That’s really good because we need some help,” Johnson said. “It’s kind of hard for me to work right now because [my child] is younger."
President Biden will continue these virtual talks with community leaders around the country. To watch the full discussion on the White House's YouTube channel, click here.
