BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A member of the Birmingham City Council will soon be retiring after 23 years in city politics.
Valerie Abbott, who has represented District 3 on the council since 2001, confirmed Wednesday she would be retiring from office at the end of her term in October 2025.
Abbott has worked at AT&T Services for over 40 years, where she currently works as a manager. Among her many duties as a council member, Abbott serves as chair of the city's planning and zoning committee.
In 2007, Abbott ran for mayor, but came sixth in a race that was ultimately won by Larry Langford. In the race, Abbott reportedly received 1.4% of the vote.
Before her time on the city council, Abbott served as the president of the Glen Iris Neighborhood Association.
