TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) -- The public will be allowed to participate in the Tuscaloosa 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Coleman Coliseum.
Alabama Athletics is hosting the event in coordination with the University of Alabama Police Department on Sept. 11 -- 23 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Though the UAPD held its first 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in 2018, the 2024 climb will be the first available to the public.
There will be a pre-climb ceremony at 7:45 a.m., and a closed climb will occur at 8:15 a.m. for first responders, according to Alabama Athletics. The public climb will start at 11:30 a.m., and those wanting to experience it can register by clicking here. There is no charge.
The event honors New York and Port Authority police, New York firefighters plus emergency medical services personnel who died while helping others on September 11, 2001. The climb includes 2,200 steps up and another 2,220 steps down, which equals to about the 110 floors the World Trade Center had.
