ONEONTA, Ala. (WIAT) — A teacher at Oneonta Middle School has resigned after being arrested and charged earlier this week with soliciting a sex act from a student.
Luis Vazquez, 29, resigned from the school during a special called board meeting Thursday night. The news was confirmed by Oneonta City Schools Superintendent Craig Sosebee.
Vazquez, who taught science at the school and was the varsity boys and girls soccer coach at Oneonta High School, was arrested Monday and charged with soliciting a sex act from a student. No other details about the case have been released.
Vazquez's sister, Alma, was a star soccer player for the school who died after going into cardiac arrest following an accident during soccer practice. In 2022, the school retired Alma's number.
Vazquez was released from the Blount County Jail after posting $6,000 bond.
