FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) -- A new grocery store opened in an area once known as a food desert Wednesday.
Carver Jones Market Fairfield opened its doors for the first time with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning. Dozens of customers flooded the store along Gary Avenue. Customers said they are glad to buy groceries in their backyard.
"I'm excited because it's in our neighborhood, and we don't have to go to Center Point, even Hueytown," customer Hawiiatha Ray said. "We can come right here and put the money into this area right here."
The CEO of the market said the store will serve as the prototype for other establishments like it in the future.
