JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is offering free Project Lifesaver bracelets following Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Education Week.

The bracelets are used to assist families in the search of missing loved ones suffering from dementia. Participants in the program receive a small arm bracelet with a radio frequency that allows deputies to locate them through a receiver device should they go missing.

“The bracelets are free of charge to the public thanks in part to different organizations in the
community who have set aside funding for this project,” Sergeant Cliff Avery said. “Once
your loved one has been assigned a bracelet, at no cost, someone from the Jefferson County
Sheriff’s Office will contact you and arrange a time to install the bracelet and train their
caregivers on how to use it.”

“Sixty percent of people living with Alzheimer’s will wander and those who do, tend to do so
repeatedly,” Miller Piggott of Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama said. “Last year we had 80
people on our program, and currently we have 50 people who are wearing Project Lifesaver
here in Jefferson County.”

Those interested in signing up for the program are asked to contact Ms. Piggott at 205-871-7970.
