BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The city of Birmingham announced the Jimmie Hale Mission is extending its overnight service for its warming station because of the forecasted freezing temperatures.

The warming station at 1569 Cooper Hill Rd. is open until midday Wednesday but will reopen at 6 p.m. Wednesday. It will then close at 7 a.m. Thursday and will repeat the same hours until 7 a.m. Saturday.

The station is a place for men, women and families in the Birmingham area who are unhoused or lack adequate heat in their residences. Meals will be provided.

The Jimmie Hale Mission is offering free shuttle service from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each evening those who need transportation assistance to the warming station. The shuttle will pick people up from 3420 Second Ave. North and the main entrance of Linn Park.

The city is helping the warming station financially and with donations of cots plus a police officer presence.
