CLANTON, Ala. (WIAT) -- Cold air continues to move across Alabama.
Officials and residents are preparing for the winter weather. The Chilton County Commission said Tuesday it has not seen or heard of any icy or poor road conditions. The commission said it is prepared to deal with anything that may happen and encourages anyone traveling to do so with caution.
Allen Williams, the commission's chairman, said the county has sand trucks and crews ready to deal with any weather that could be coming.
“They're on standby," Williams said. "If trees fall down, getting trees out of the road. Ice will break limbs. The sheriff's department -- they are always prepared.
Williams said the county is keeping a close eye on bridges and looking out for black ice. If you do see a roadway that needs attention, Williams said you should call 911.
“It sends out an alert to everyone -- the road department, the sheriff’s department -- and tells them we have found this issue,” Williams said.
Williams said the cold weather has some concerned for Chilton County's biggest industry: peach farming. The owner of Peach Park, Mark Gray, said there is no reason to be concerned. The cold weather is actually helping this year’s crop.
“Right now, the trees are dormant," Gray said. "So they need this cold, below 45-degree weather, so they can get their dormant hours. Right now, we have a lot of dormant hours, so it's looking pretty good so far."
With temperatures expected to stay below freezing, the city of Clanton has opened a warming center. It's located right behind in the basement of city hall and will be open 24 hours a day until temperatures rise.
