BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The closing of a Big Lots distribution center in Montgomery will leave nearly 500 without a job next week.

According to Alabama's WARN List, a listing of business closing across the state, Big Lots announced that it would be closing a distribution center in Montgomery, effective Monday, Jan. 6. The announcement cited Christmas Eve as the day the decision was made.

Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, subsequently beginning going-out-of-business sales at all stores. Prior to filing for bankruptcy, the company had already closed 400 stores across the country in 2024.

On Friday, Big Lots announced that Variety Wholesalers, Inc. would acquire between 200 and 400 stores to run under the Big Lots brand.
