BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) --  A man who was fatally shot inside a Birmingham gas station was identified Monday morning.

According to Birmingham Police Department Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, a person spoke to a sergeant at the BPD East Precinct building around 4:45 p.m. and said they shot someone in the 100 block of Roebuck Plaza Drive. Officers arrived at the scene and went inside the Murphy USA gas station in that block.

Police found a man lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced the man dead.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the man as 54-year-old Richard Allen Judkins.

The preliminary investigation suggests a physical altercation took place inside the business between Judkins and the man. The unidentified man then shot Judkins and turned himself into police custody, according to BPD.

Those with information on the case are urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
