Winter Weather Awareness Week in Alabama

As we head into the colder months, now is the perfect time to begin thinking about how to dress your home for the winter. As we know in the Deep South, bitterly cold temperatures and winter storms are not common, but when they occur, the impacts can quickly become devastating.

Each year, we encourage people to winterize their home which can be covering and insulating pipes underneath your home that are exposed to the cold temperatures. These pipes can be wrapped in towels, old clothing, rags, etc. Anything that can absorb moisture and keep them warmer than the air around it will work. Also, if you have any cracks in your windows or doors, you want to repair or seal those up as well.

To lower your chance of becoming stuck on the road during life-threatening cold weather, be sure to get your vehicle(s) serviced before the cold temperatures arrive. This will ensure your battery is healthy, which could be the saving grace if you're stranded during harsh conditions. You can keep extra blankets, non-perishable food, and water in the car in case of an emergency. We encourage folks to have at least two days worth of supplies inside their home and car.

This Winter season will be driven by a weak La Nina, which traditionally brings warmer and drier weather compared to average for the Deep South. However, we know it only takes one significant cold snap or winter storm to become very impactful.

Stay with the CBS-42 Storm Team as we safely guide you through this upcoming Winter season.
