BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Birmingham City Councilman J.T. Moore was arrested early Sunday morning for reportedly driving under the influence in Mobile County.

Creola Police Chief Shane Stringer said the arrest occurred at 3:55 a.m. after officers received calls of someone driving dangerously slow on I-65 in a city-owned vehicle.

“He was driving extremely slow on the interstate, and they were afraid someone was going to rear end the vehicle,” Stringer said.

When police found the black Chevrolet Tahoe that Moore was driving, they observed the car parked on the shoulder near the 20 mile marker of I-65. Moore was asleep behind the wheel.

Police believe Moore was headed back to Birmingham. Police assert Moore had a blood alcohol content of 0.12, which is above the legal limit. Law enforcement does not know why Moore was driving a city vehicle in Mobile County.

“He did inform them he was a council member with the City of Birmingham,” Stringer said.

The Birmingham mayor's office did not respond to a request from CBS 42 News for comment on the arrest. A city council spokesperson stated the city council is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Moore is chair of the Community Development Committee and a member of the Public Safety Committee.
