HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Hoover Zoning and Planning Commission met Monday night to decide if 30 acres of planned commercial property at the Tattersall Park development will be rezoned as mixed use.
The plan comes from EBSCO Industries and Radiant Investments, the current owners of the property. The proposal for the site includes hundreds of residential units, a hotel and thousands of feet of commercial and green space.
“This is what young people want," Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato said. "They aren’t buying houses. Young people out of college just starting their professional career. They want to move into an environment they are trying to create at Tattersall."
The plan includes up to 170 senior housing units, 137 other multi-family units and a hotel with up to 125 rooms. It also has 23,000 square feet of retail space and 12,500 square feet of restaurant space.
“Create something that has a mixed-use commercial, residential, business," Brocato said. "You can walk to a coffee shop. You can walk to a restaurant, maybe even your doctor’s office is there."
A petition opposed to the proposal has gathered over 1,200 signatures. Organizer Ashley Lovell said the development will directly impact her neighborhood, which is located just behind Tattersall Park.
“I want to see things that are going to benefit our community, not things that are going to pack more residential,” Lovell said.
She is concerned that with adding hundreds to the area, traffic and infrastructure could be affected.
“It is a dramatic change for our community," Lovell said. "Three hundred seven units is what is being proposed. That is a massive infrastructure strain. It’s a huge deal. In addition, it's not what was promised since 1989."
Brocato said he has seen the petition. He encourages everyone who signed it to listen to the full plan before making up their minds.
