Stat Breakdown: UAB football continues to struggle in 2024

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- With another suffocating loss in American Athletic Conference play Saturday, the UAB football program is continuing to produce dismal statistics.

Army clobbered UAB, 44-10, and led 20-3 after the first quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Army was up, 41-3. The Blazers lost the total offensive yards battle, 515-303, despite running one fewer play than the Black Knights. Army gained 413 rushing yards and 28 first downs.

With a 1-5 record, UAB's winning percentage is tied for the third worst in the FBS. The Blazers' -11 turnover margin is tied for the lowest in the nation with Auburn, Southern Miss and Temple. They've turned over the ball 14 times.

UAB is also 95th in total defense but 125th in scoring defense, as it's allowed 38 points per game. The Blazers' red zone defense has allowed scores on 25 out of 26 attempts, good for the ninth worst in the nation. UAB is 89th in team passing efficiency defense.

Their total offense is 95th, which is a spot lower than Iowa's. Birmingham's FBS program is tied for 115th in scoring offense with 20.3 points per game. The Blazers' red zone offense is scoring 75% of the time, which is tied for 117th. UAB is 112th in team passing efficiency.

Out of 133 programs, UAB is eighth in most penalties per game at 8.67, though they are tied at 15 for most penalty yards per game with Alabama at 72.17 yards per game.

Blazer kicker Jonah Delange has been a bright spot for the program, as he's hit all 10 field goal attempts and made a 51-yard field goal. Punter Patrick Foley is averaging 43.4 yards per yard, with his longest being 61 yards.

Since starting as UAB's head coach in 2023, Trent Dilfer has recorded a 5-13 overall record and won three out of 11 games in American Athletic Conference competition. Since joining the FBS in 1996, the Blazers have won at least two games in every season, though it did not compete from 2015-16. They finished 2-10 in 2007 and 2013.

The Blazers will be 2-4 South Florida's opponent for its homecoming game Saturday, which will kick off at 2:30 p.m.
