BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A fifth officer at the Walker County Jail has reached a plea agreement for his role in the death of Anthony Mitchell, court documents reveal.
On Thursday, Grayson Colin Woods signed a plea agreement on one count of deprivation of rights -- making him the fifth officer to stake his involvement in the case.
On Jan. 13, 2023, Mitchell was arrested by Walker County Sheriff’s deputies after allegedly firing at an officer during a wellness check. During his incarceration, his family argued he was neglected by staff and medical professionals.
Within the agreement, Woods stated that Mitchell was left to lie naked, covered in feces on a cement jail cell floor without a bed or blankets in frigid winter temperatures. Woods had also lied about "not remembering" which nurse he spoke to about Mitchell's neglect to protect her from facing possible charges.
On Jan. 26, Mitchell lost consciousness and was transported to a local hospital where he later died at the age of 33. His cause of death was listed as hypothermia, sepsis and “medical neglect” by the Walker County Coroner’s Office.
Woods faces a maximum penalty of no more than a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
