TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – A man is dead following an overnight officer-involved shooting.

Sgt. Josh Hastings from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division said police responded to a trespassing call at the Whataburger on McFarland Blvd. around 1:30 a.m. The call was for a male suspect, who he identified as Joseph Driver.

Hastings said the suspect pulled out a knife and cut one of the officers on the hand. The two officers then shot the suspect, killing him, he said.

"It's hard to tell you what's going through their mind," Hastings said. "Everybody has a different reaction to certain situations. From a law enforcement standpoint, if you're met with deadly force you're justified in returning with deadly force."

The two Tuscaloosa police officers are on administrative leave per police protocol.
