BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- A man is dead after a shooting in west Birmingham on Saturday night that police believe stemmed from a verbal dispute.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department stated officers responded around 9:37 p.m. to two ShotSpotter notifications. The first alert recorded around five shots, and the second report tallied about 12 rounds.
When police arrived in the 1400 block of First Avenue West, they saw a man lying in the roadway unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel pronounced the man dead. Police will publicly identify the victim after their next of kin is notified.
Wade noted the preliminary investigation shows the victim was in a verbal argument earlier in the evening with the suspect at a different location. The verbal argument continued in the 1400 block of First Avenue West. The victim was then fatally shot.
The suspect fled the scene, and there is no one in custody in connection to the shooting. Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
