BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Metal Arts Program at Sloss Furnaces will host an artist talk titled “From the Studio of Richard Hunt” on July 18 from 6 to 7 p.m.
The talk will focus on Chicago-based sculptor Richard Hunt (1935-2023) and the influence of his work. The event will be free and open to the public.
The talk will take place at the Sloss Furnaces Visitor’s Center, beginning with an introduction by Jade Powers, Hugh Kaul Curator of Contemporary Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, featuring artists Gwen Yen Chiu and Eric Stephenson, who both worked with Hunt.
Stephenson is a sculptor and the director of the Hunt Studio, and Chiu is a Taiwanese-American artist who worked as Hunt's apprentice. Both are based in Chicago.
Both artists will discuss their work in the Hunt Studio, how Hunt's work influenced their own and how Sloss Furnaces and the Metal Arts program impacted their careers.
