BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An officer with the Birmingham Police Department has been arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting his "on and off" girlfriend during a fight.

Justtin Bisharat, 28, was arrested Friday and charged with domestic violence (strangulation). According to the BPD, the victim reported the incident on Thursday, claiming that Bisharat had assaulted her.

Detectives, who cited injuries that were visible on the victim, determined that the fight had happened in the 2700 block of 4th Avenue South. Bisharat was reportedly on duty at the time of the alleged assault but was not in his police vehicle.

According to jail records, Bisharat was booked in the Jefferson County Jail at 4:13 p.m. Friday, where his bond was set at $30,000. As of Friday afternoon, he remained in jail.

Bisharat has been with the BPD since 2019, according to his LinkedIn page.

“The Birmingham Police Department acted swiftly upon notification of this incident and
conducted a full investigation," BPD Chief Scott Thurmond said in a statement. "The Birmingham Police Department does not condone this type of behavior and will not tolerate it.”
