BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The City of Birmingham’s Poet Laureate Salaam Green has nominated two women to serve as the community's poet fellows.
Karima Moore will serve as the inaugural Youth Poet Fellow and Maati Sanovia will serve as the inaugural Adult Poet Fellow.
The duo will work with two Birmingham Public Library branches to facilitate poetry programming to support literacy and summer reading initiatives. Each fellow will receive a $500 honorarium that Create Birmingham will administer.
According to a press release, Moor will work with BPL’s Summer STEAMER Camp, providing elementary students with an interdisciplinary curriculum to reverse summer learning loss. The camp will take place at BPL's Central Branch.
The Poet Fellowship Initiative is a partnership among Green, Birmingham Public Libraries and Create Birmingham.
