BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Hundreds of flights to and from Houston, TX and Dallas, TX have been canceled due to Hurricane Beryl making landfall early Monday morning.

Some of those flight delays and cancelations are impacting travelers at Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport.

"We're trying to think through. We have to get back to work, so we're trying to think through 'do we rent a car and just drive the 10 hours if you know we're not going to be able to take off because all of the flight paths are, you know, all out of wack with the hurricane?' So, we're going to do what we have to do," said Dallas traveler Elizabeth Coleman.

Coleman and her family are among the thousands of travelers affected by the flight delays and cancellations. Coleman said their initial flight from Birmingham to Dallas was delayed over an hour.

A Houston native, Coleman said it's hard knowing what everyone there is going through.

"We survived Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and that was really really difficult. Having no power for a week and being under water was traumatizing, so to see that Houston is once again going through that is tough to watch. We have family at our house in Dallas right now, we have other friends at our house because they have no power," said Coleman.

According to CBS News, roughly 700 flights arriving to and departing from Houston's airports were cancelled.

Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport officials said Hurricane Beryl is causing air travel challenges and they're asking travelers with plans to Houston over the next few days to check with your airline.
