CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- A Calhoun County Sheriff's Office jail accounts clerk was arrested on theft charges after allegedly stealing over $45,000 from the account.

A supplemental audit of the account showed an account deficiency of $47,036.20. Allyson Smith, the jail accounts clerk, was arrested for first-degree theft and admitted to stealing a portion of the cash deposit each week during interviews, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.

CCSO says they were being audited by the Alabama Examiners of Public Accounts Office as required by law. The audit revealed a delay in deposits that yielded a "caution" notation on the audit exit report. Upon investigation it was found that some deposits were being made several weeks late, outside the time frame established by accounting standards and the account balances were insufficient in order to cover the liabilities.

Criminal proceedings against Smith are underway and restitution will be sought as part of that process.
