BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department arrested a 15-year-old student at Huffman High School after a student was cut with a knife Wednesday morning.
According to BPD, school resource officers were alerted of a fight inside the school around 9:15 a.m. Officers arrived when they learned school security and school admin staff broke up a fight between a 15-year-old male student and a 17-year-old male student.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel and a school nurse treated the student who was cut during the incident. The 15-year-old student was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Family Court.
Following the incident, a Birmingham City Schools spokesperson issued this statement:
Earlier today an attempted stabbing was averted at Huffman High School. A student smuggled a knife into the school and tried to stab a classmate. A security officer intervened; however, a student was nicked by the knife.
Security is investigating to determine how the knife made it past the scanners. The safety of our scholars and our employees is a priority at Huffman and in Birmingham City Schools.
