BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department said one man is dead and two people are injured following an overnight shooting at the Collegeville Housing Community located on 30th Avenue North.

According to officer Truman Fitzgerald with the BPD, the shooting happened just before midnight Sunday at the housing community. He said North Precinct officers arrived at the apartments and found a man and a woman inside shot.

The man died at the scene, and the woman was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The BPD later identified the man who died as Brandon Lee, 35, of Birmingham.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows the man who died had been arguing with another man who fired shots into an apartment and hit the two victims. Police believe one of the victims may have returned fire and hit the suspect.

At around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, a potential suspect suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at UAB Hospital and is now in police custody. The potential suspect is facing pending charges potentially for capital murder and attempted murder. They will remain in police custody while hospitalized.

Those with information on the case are urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
