BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a 12-year-old boy injured Saturday evening.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the BPD said at around 6:25 p.m., police were dispatched to a person shot call in the 4900 block of Avenue Q. Officers arrived in the area and found the gunshot victim at a residence in the 1600 block of 49th Street Ensley.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel transported the boy to Children's of Alabama. The boy was diagnosed with a not life-threatening injury.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows the victim was inside a residence when the homeowner and a man the homeowner knew were in a verbal argument that led to shots being exchanged. The boy was the only person the shooting injured.

Those with information on the case are urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
