HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — A staple of the Saban-era Crimson Tide will now be helping the next generation of football players at Hoover High School.
On Tuesday, the school announced that Trent Richardson, a running back for the University of Alabama football team from 2009 to 2011, would be joining the coaching staff for the Hoover Bucs under head coach Drew Gilmer. Last season, Richardson was a running backs coach for Ramsay High School.
"Look who is rolling in to HooverU! Join us in welcoming former @AlabamaFTBL and @NFL great Trent Richardson to the @BucsFootball coaching staff! Big Time Bucs, making Big Time moves! #RollTide #GodBless#GoBucs," a post from Hoover High's X account stated.
A native of Pensacola, Florida, Richardson was a standout at Alabama, twice being named to the First-Team All-SEC, winning the Doak Walker Award and leading the Tide to two national championships. During his time with the Tide, Richardson rushed for 3,243 yards and 35 touchdowns.
After graduating from Alabama, Richardson was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, where he only played two seasons between 2012 and 2013 before playing another two seasons for the Indianapolis Colts. Following short stints with the Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens and Saskatchewan Roughriders, Richardson returned to Alabama to play for the Birmingham Iron in the Alliance of American Football's sole season.
After two years of playing with the Caudillos de Chihuahua in Mexico, Richardson returned back to Alabama.
