BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting near Guglielmo Marconi Park Thursday afternoon.
According to public information officer Truman Fitzgerald, officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of 7th Avenue North just after 2 p.m.
An adult male was found shot and lying near an outside A/C unit. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police believe a shootout happened at the intersection of 25th Street North and 7th Avenue North. Fitzgerald observed at least 50 various shell casings were marked in the roadway.
Additionally, a Gray Chrysler 300 had crashed into a utility pole and tree at the scene. Police believe the victim was driving the vehicle before he was shot and ran for help.
Fitzgerald also stated that detectives are following a possible lead and believe the shooting to be a targeted attack. There is no one in custody at this time.
