CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade announced Tuesday he is retiring after spending about three decades in law enforcement.

Wade, who spent 20 years as either a chief deputy or sheriff, said those positions require a lot from a person and take a toll. He said he was presented with an unexpected opportunity that will allow him to focus on his health and his family's well-being. Wade said his retirement from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office will be effective April 1.

Wade said he has served Calhoun County with honor and integrity. He said it's time for him to move on to the next stage of his life. Wade mentioned he feels someone who is younger and has more career ahead of them could be good for the sheriff's office.
