BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man was shot and charged with assault following a physical confrontation with a security guard over the weekend in Birmingham.

Jefferson County deputies and Birmingham police responded to reports of a shooting on the 700 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. Saturday. At the scene, deputies found 21-year-old Ty Austin Bell shot in the upper torso and a security guard suffering from unspecified injuries to his face. Injuries in both cases were not life-threatening.

Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office report the shooting happened after a member of the Jefferson County Court House security team found a "suspicious male" (Bell) in the parking structure of the 2121 Building and followed the man to an alleyway of the parking garage when the two began to argue. The argument reportedly turned physical and Bell was shot.

Bell was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment prior to being transferred to the Jefferson County Jail for processing. Bell, who is transient, is charged with second degree assault following the confrontation and is being held on $10,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
