ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- An Etowah County woman was arrested and charged with neglect of her daughter following an investigation.
According to Etowah County investigators, they were alerted by the Alabama Department of Human Resources regarding concerns of abuse and neglect of a disabled, nonverbal person.
Authorities located the victim and mother at their residence in on Sligo Road in the Egypt community, and the daughter was reportedly in "dire condition." Deputies say she was suffering from multiple pressure sores, breathing difficulties and more. She was transported to UAB Medical Center and placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
DHR petitioned the Etowah County Probate Court for an emergency placement and guardianship. Following a court hearing on Feb. 20, Shana Bennett allegedly admitted to the neglect of her daughter. She was charged with felony neglect of a dependent and booked into the Etowah County Detention Center with a $20,000 bond.
