Alabama veteran who was in Russian captivity reflects on war in Ukraine

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Alex Drueke, an Alabama veteran who Russian forces captured in Ukraine during the ongoing war, reflected Monday three years after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Drueke, a Tuscaloosa native, went to Ukraine in April 2022 to volunteer with the Ukrainian military against Russia. He was captured during an operation in June of that year.

Saudi Arabia helped coordinate his release in a prisoner swap that happened in September 2022. Drueke has since returned to Ukraine twice.
