BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department announced an arrest was made this week following a deadly hit-and-run that occurred on June 16.

Sammus Hikeem Strickland, 27, allegedly hit 84-year-old Erwin Ellis Curtis, who was crossing a road in his wheelchair. The BPD stated Strickland is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death. Curtis died at UAB Hospital from his injuries July 5.

Birmingham police noted the driver of the vehicle that hit Curtis fled the scene before officers arrived. BPD detectives showed case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office on Thursday and obtained a warrant for Strickland's arrest. Strickland was placed in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
