BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham Police Department announced Saturday it obtained reports of a scam where someone falsely claiming to be with the BPD is calling residents.
The BPD stated the scammer notifies victims that they or a relative have unpaid fines that could lead to warrant. The scammer then demands payment over the phone, according to the BPD.
Though the BPD has received a number of reports, it does not know the total number of people the scam has affected. The BPD asserted it will never call to request personal information over a phone call. The BPD urges residents to not provide personal information or any payments if scammed over the phone.
The BPD asks those who have been targeted to file a report with the department by calling 205-328-9311.
