BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The start of the 2025 Alabama Legislature is less than two days away.
This year, lawmakers have a long list of pre-filed bills to debate.
According to John Wahl, chairman of the Alabama GOP, the Republican Party is united behind President Trump's administration. He says we will see bills and policies that support Trump's agenda.
State Democrats say they are closely watching what’s happening in Washington and how national policies will impact Alabama.
“I think you are going to see legislation battling the agenda that we see coming from socialists, or the left side of the political spectrum, things like securing our citizens right to not be debanked. You are going to see legislation on debanking,” said Wahl.
On the other side of the aisle, Democrat State Representative Mary Moore says she is looking to expand health care coverage in the state. A primary goal for her heading into this week is legalizing gambling in the state.
“We want the whole nine yards. We want the bingo, lottery, I think both tap and help each other, because in the process of doing a full gaming bill I believe we could, we need to do more for education because of all the problems we have, we need to do more for health care,” Moore said.
Both republicans and democrats say they are focused on addressing crime. There are at least nine pre-filed bills addressing crime prevention in bigger Alabama cities.
“You are going to see legislation that talks about how we combat crime,” said Wahl.
“Glock switches, AR and AK 15 series of guns, so I know that’s something that going to come up and something we are probably going to deal with,” Moore added.
Both democrats and republicans encourage anyone who has an issue they would like addressed to contact their local elected official.
