Birmingham shooting in College Hills leaves man dead; suspect in custody

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- A man is dead after a shooting that Birmingham police believe stemmed from a domestic violence situation Monday evening.

According to officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department, officers got a call around 5:40 p.m. of a person shot in the 100 block of Ninth Court West. There were also ShotSpotter notifications in the area.

At the scene, police found a man lying unresponsive in a residence's driveway. He was suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel transported the man to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The BPD later identified the victim as Damian Dawson, 47, of Birmingham.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows the shooting stemmed from a domestic violence situation. Police think the girlfriend or an ex-girlfriend of the victim shot Dawson.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle initially. Fitzgerald confirmed the woman turned herself in to police at BPD Headquarters Monday night.

Those with information on the shooting are urged to call the BPD at 205-254-1764 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-1764.
