Pinson man dies from self-inflicted gunshot after firing gun at deputies

PINSON, Ala. (WIAT) -- A man who allegedly fired a gun at deputies during a welfare check in Pinson died Wednesday night.

Ricardo Louis Augustus Sutherland, 39, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday, shortly after getting in a standoff with Jefferson County deputies who arrived at a home on Old Pinson Road regarding a report of a "mentally disturbed person threatening to harm himself," the Jefferson County Coroner's Office reports.

No information has been released on Sutherland's condition at the time he died.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Thursday to determine his cause of death.

The case remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
