Martin Luther King Day: Temperatures will only climb into the upper 20s/low 30s as wind chills make the air feel more like the upper teens/low 20s into the afternoon under abundant sunshine.

Weather Aware Monday-Tuesday: A shot of arctic air will lead to an extended freeze lasting through Wednesday afternoon in most areas. The coldest air will be on Monday with wind chills close to 0° in the morning and below 25° all day. The bitter cold continues into Tuesday with highs only reaching to around freezing with light snow for areas south of I-20.

Snow Tuesday: Confidence has increased in regard to the northern cut-off to the light snow on Tuesday afternoon. Areas just north of I-20 could see some flurries, otherwise you’ll stay dry, cold, and cloudy. For the I-20 corridor, a dusting is possible in spots, but the better chance for this exists just south of I-20. Areas from Greene to Hale, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, and Clay counties need to prepare for light to moderate snow on Tuesday afternoon into the evening with accumulations ranging from 0.5 - 1”.

Snow should begin in Greene and Hale counties just after lunch on Tuesday before it continues spreading northeast across areas mainly south of the I-20 corridor. By 5-7 PM, most of the steadier snow will be wrapping up but some lingering snow showers are possible into the late evening hours on Tuesday.

Where it snows, impacts will be significant. It only takes a trace of snow to cause problems and with temperatures this cold, the snow will stick from first flake to last flake.

The Birmingham metro should prepare for up to a dusting of snow, but the odds are increasing that we remain dry with the accumulating snow remaining to our south.

This Week: The arctic air lasts into mainly Thursday morning before we all climb back to the 40s Thursday afternoon. These temperatures continue trending warmer heading into the upcoming weekend where we should be in the 50s for Saturday and Sunday. Our next potential rain-maker will approach the area next Sunday into the beginning of next week.
