JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- A deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was briefly abducted and assaulted by an inmate at the Jefferson County Jail on Monday.

Reontay Harley, 33, abducted a deputy and held him in a cell at 1:30 p.m. Monday in a standoff that lasted less than 20 minutes, the JCSO reports. The jail's extraction unit entered the cell and were able to restrain Harley and remove the deputy.

Harley and the deputy were both taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Harley, who has been in the jail since last summer on arson and murder charges, received an additional charge of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault and menacing.

“We are pleased that our Extraction Unit acted quickly and that they safely removed our deputy," Sheriff Mark Pettway said in a statement. " I’m also thankful that this incident ended with no one being injured.”
