Birmingham Police Department officers injured after suspect crashes stolen SUV into parked police cars

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Three West Precinct patrol officers with the Birmingham Police Department were injured after a suspect crashed a stolen SUV into three parked police cars Wednesday night, according to the BPD.

The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. When officers approached the driver of the SUV, he became confrontational.

The suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Two officers were injured in the crash, while the third was injured during the struggle with the suspect. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and aided all parties involved in the incident. Two of the officers were transported to a local hospital for additional treatment. All three BPD patrol cars involved were significantly damaged.

BPD officers later learned that the SUV had been stolen during a domestic burglary in East Birmingham earlier that evening. The suspect was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was discharged. The suspect was then taken to the Birmingham City Jail and placed on a 48-Hour Felony Extension for Assault 1st Degree. The suspect also faces charges for the earlier Domestic Violence incident.

BPD Special Victims Unit and BPD wreck investigators are investigating this incident.

Art this time, all officers have been discharged and are recovering from their injuries.
