CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) -- The city of Cullman was awarded an over $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the St. Bernard Bridge Replacement Project.
Republican U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, who represents Alabama's Fourth Congressional District, made the announcement Monday. According to his office, the grant will help replace and relocate the existing two-lane St. Bernard Bridge on U.S. 278 and Alabama 69, which goes over Eight Mile Creek. Aderholt's office stated he secured $11 million in a bill the House passed to help fund replacement costs and meet the project's expected completion.
“I was proud to write a letter of support for the City of Cullman in securing this vital infrastructure investment,” Aderholt said in a statement. “Replacing and widening the St. Bernard Bridge is crucial for enhancing transportation safety and efficiency in our region. This project will not only improve traffic flow along US Hwy 278 but will also support economic growth and ensure our infrastructure can meet future demands.”
U.S. 278 is expected to be widen from Fourth Avenue to past St. Bernard Drive, placing the adjoining roadway and approaches with the new bridge.
