BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Miles College has named a former NFL cornerback to lead its football team next year.
Chris Goode, who played at the University of Alabama before going on to play for the Indianapolis Colts from 1987 to 1993, will be named Miles College's next football coach during a press conference at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Goode will replace Sam Shade, who coached the Golden Bears from 2022 to 2024 before leaving for the head coaching job at Alabama A&M.
"Chris Goode's leadership and dedication to student development makes him the ideal choice to guide our football program forward," Miles President Bobbie Knight said in a statement. "We are excited to see how his guidance and vision will propel our student-athletes to continued success both on the field and in the classroom."
This will be Goode's first time as a head coach of a collegiate football program. Following his time in the NFL, Goode served as defensive coordinator for the arena football team the Birmingham Steeldogs from 2000 to 2004. Goode, who works in real estate, also runs Goode Elite Prep, a post-graduate academy for student-athletes.
Goode has also served as a player advisor for Harvard University's Football Players Health Study and was president of the Birmingham chapter of the National Football League Players Association.
"We are excited for the future of Miles College football under the direction of Coach Chris Goode and are confident that Coach Goode's leadership will bring continued success to Miles College football," director of athletics Fred Watson said in a statement.
The Miles College Golden Bears finished last season 10-3, winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and going to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
