BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Blood Center in New Orleans said blood donors are needed to help the surviving victims in Wednesday's attack in New Orleans.

The Life South Community Blood Center in Birmingham is assisting with the request by sending products to help during the wake of the attack.

"We reached out to the Blood Center in New Orleans this morning to let them know that we are here to offer support, and they did contact us back and asked for some products," said Regional Director of Life South Brian Garrett.

Garret said blood donations are always needed year-round, especially when tragedies such as this occur.

According to Life South and the American Red Cross, blood donations are often low this time of year, therefore having sufficient blood supply when tragedies like this happen is crucial.

"If I asked about 5 people on the street right now if they had even thought to donate during the holidays I'm pretty sure it would be low on their list. But it is important for people to continue to donate, because that's what allows us to keep that blood on the shelves for the patients who really are counting on it," said American Red Cross Communications Director Annette Rowland.

With over 30 people injured in Wednesday's mass killing in New Orleans, the Blood Center in New Orleans said the need for donations is urgent to help patients.
