New Year’s Day: A return to winter-like air starts Wednesday with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s with mostly sunny skies.

This Week: Highs will remain in the lower 50s through Friday with dry weather and sunshine continuing into Saturday. Overnight lows will also return back to near or below freezing Thursday through Saturday mornings, with Saturday morning being the coldest. That is when all of central Alabama will dip into the mid/upper 20s. Highs will only make it into the middle 40s on Saturday afternoon with some clouds returning to our sky.

This will be ahead of an approaching storm system moving in from our west. Temperatures will try to fall into the middle 30s on Saturday night, before rising between midnight and sunrise on Sunday thanks to a warm front lifting in from our south. This will allow for any precipitation that falls on Sunday to be in the form of rain as temperatures are forecast to reach the lower 50s on Sunday afternoon with rain showers moving in. These will be most widespread on Sunday night into early Monday.

A very strong cold front will pass through Monday, ending our rain from west to east. Temperatures will return to the 40s for highs next Monday and Tuesday, then the bottom drops out heading into the middle and end of next week. A potent push of arctic air will settle into the region, but confidence is low on exactly how cold it may get. Forecast guidance keeps unleashing multiple cold spells heading into mid-January. We will have to monitor for wintry precipitation chances past the seven day forecast.
