Fourth of July events happening in central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — With Fourth of July almost a week away, residents and families across Alabama will be finalizing their plans for the nationwide holiday.

CBS 42 has compiled a list of cities in central Alabama showcasing firework displays and festivities in honor of Independence Day.

Birmingham

Downtown Homewood will set up various rides and attractions for its Independence Day festival starting at 5 p.m. on July 4. Unlimited attractions wristbands can be at the intersection of 18th Street South and 29th Avenue South.

Vulcan Park's Thunder on the Mountain will kick off its fireworks show at around 9 pm., as Pyro Shows of Alabama will release over 2,500 shells of pyrotechnics.

Additionally, Sloss Furnaces will host its first-ever "Fireworks at the Furnace" and Fourth of July Block Party. This free event requires attendees to reserve a ticket in advance, as captivity will be maxed out at 600 people.

Parking opens at 6:30 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. Live music, food and drink trucks are planned, with the highlight being a spectacular view of Vulcan's Thunder on the Mountain. Attendees are advised to bring picnic blankets or chairs.

A 4th of July Family Festival is happening at Railroad Park from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., which also features a great view of Thunder on the Mountain's fireworks show.

Hoover

The City of Hoover's annual fireworks show will be held on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. at the Hoover Met Complex.

Attendees can sit in their cars and watch the 20-minute display -- featuring patriotic music via 87.9 FM -- from the main parking lot. Tailgating before the show is permitted as early as 5:00 p.m. What’s Your Flav food truck will be selling shaved ice nearby.

Trussville

The Trussville Freedom Celebration starts at 6 p.m. at the Mall near Cahaba Elementary with fireworks starting at 9 p.m. on July 4. The event is free to attend and features food vendors, fun and a musical performance by Acts of Congress.

Tuscaloosa

Tuscaloosa's annual Celebration on the River kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater on July 4. This free, family-friendly event presented by the City of Tuscaloosa includes kids’ activities, live music by the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra and more.

Following brief remarks from Mayor Walt Maddox, the fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m.

Sylacauga

Presented by Coosa Pines Federal Credit Union, Sylacauga's Fourth of July Community Fireworks Celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Central Park on Friday.

Food trucks will be on-site as well as an inflatable slide, mega sprinkler and foam machine. The fireworks show will start at around 8:30 p.m. as the sun sets.
