Team behind popular Helen restaurant opening new seafood, raw bar in Birmingham

MARGARET, Ala. (WIAT) -- A new seafood restaurant will be opening soon from the culinary team behind Helen in Birmingham.

Chef Rob McDaniel and his wife, Emily, recently announced their new restaurant Bayonet, a raw bar that will open early next year adjacent to Helen on 2nd Avenue North. In a press release announcing the new restaurant, Bayonet was described as having an "innovative menu of sustainably sourced seafood and raw bar offerings, served in a vibrant and lively atmosphere." 

Guests at Bayonet can expect frequent menu changes with offerings such as salads, chowders, crudos, sandwiches, toasts, and "elevated entrees."  

Bayonet will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, offering an all-day menu starting at 11 a.m. with dinner options available beginning at 5 p.m. The beverage list includes an assortment of cocktails, champagnes, and different wines carefully chosen to pair with different seafood dishes.  

“We’re excited to introduce Birmingham to an unexpected dining experience that’s as bold and vibrant as the seafood we serve,” McDaniel said in the statement. “Bayonet will challenge expectations by presenting new and creative ways to enjoy seafood while remaining approachable and fun.” 

Since opening in 2020, Helen has received received critical praise around town and has been a popular destination for fine dining. In 2021, Esquire magazine named Helen as one of the best new restaurants in the country.
